When I was asked by the ‘Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’ to design a poster for their ‘Summer in the City’ concert series I sat back in my chair and played air guitar to celebrate. It was time to have a creative jam session.
I used a good mix of old school and digital illustration methods to produce this poster and this tutorial will show you everything from research, rough pencil sketches all the way to creating a home made texture to use on the final product.

Our world is rarely perfect, smooth or flawless. So it’s no wonder why textures can add such a rich visual aesthetic to an artists work. The layers of distress and minute artifacts running through an illustration can make it far more powerful for the viewer then without.
This tutorial takes an existing illustration of mine and using found surfaces textures I apply them to the art to create a uniquely textured final illustration. Icluded in this download is source files for both CS2 Illustrator and Photoshop.

Working for other agencies as a creative hired gun is a lot of fun. It’s also somewhat frustrating at times as well. Of course you have the creative give and take that is common with such relationships, but at times communication can be somewhat perplexing and when it’s all said and done you may end up with a great mark that is never used.
Take a peek into such a project as I set out to create an illustrative design solution for a brand logo re-design.
