Stencil art is a very viral form of street art. Widely used to voice opinions on a wide range of subjects within cultures worldwide and often used to voice dissent against the powers that be politically.
It’s a graphic form of graffiti and is very pedestrian in it’s approach and complexity for ease of application thus facilitating it’s ability to multiply quickly and be seen by more people. Even though it’s use is fundamentally propaganda in nature it still lends itself to digital illustration quite easily.
This tutorial will take you from my source of inspiration to the actual contruction and application of the stencil art. Included in this download is a layered CS2 Photoshop file which will show how I go about building my reference.
(Tutorial Includes Notes in both ‘English’ and ‘Español’.)

Another fantastic tutorial! I’ve enjoyed all of your tutorials but there is one thing that has been really bothering me. How the heck are you taking the pictures with both of your hands in them?? I just have this weird image in my mind of you holding your camera in your mouth and shooting with your tongue or something. Do your cats take them? Or do you have a personal photo assistant?

LOL
I use a tri-pod and a timer. Sometimes it means going back and de-constructing for a tutorial but most times I am able to capture as I create the project. All depends on the deadline and if that allows me the time to do it as I create.

Ah I see. Thank you very much. I can now enjoy the tutorials with that mystery solved. And thanks again for the tutorials! They are an amazing resource. I love how in depth they are. I would love to see some more about the step of actually creating the vectors, for example how you decide where to place a vertice and so forth. Thanks!

I recently found your site while websurfing. I haven’t had a chance to try any of your tutorials – yet. But, I did download the doodling one to give a go when I have a spare moment. I was compelled to comment here because there is a graffitti artist in Los Angeles that uses stencils. I’ve noticed his (or her) appearance along Melrose the last couple of months. I normally don’t like graffitti but his are great and put a smile on my face. I have no clue who it is. I’ve actually thought of going along and photographing as many of the pictures that I can and doing a blog entry. I’m beginning to think it is the “new” Modern Art form.
Anyhow, thanks for what you do here.
