Documenting The Illustrative Design ProcessCreated by Von. R. Glitschka

Have you ever thought of a unique concept, but then wasn’t sure you could pull it off because it required a good amount of illustrative work and frankly speaking that intimidated you? Or your budget was such that you couldn’t hire it out either? So, instead you just pursued another design direction?

Well, fear no more my fellow creatives! This session will walk you through systematic illustrative design methods you’ll be able to integrate into your own creative process. In the end you’ll be better equipped to pursue those design ideas that require an illustrative touch far more effectively, thus expanding your overall creative potential and skill set as a graphic designer.

Included in this download: The entire “Illustrative Design” session from the HOW Design Conference, Exhaustive notes regarding each step of the process, Quick reference sheet to help you remember each step, MP3 audio file of entire session so you can listen while you go through it yourself and Instructions on how to use everything on a MAC or PC.

  1. Great stuff, thanks for posting these files.

  2. Wow, thanks, Von! I was wishing I could have gone to the Conference to see this session. This is the next best thing. Now Jeff Fisher just needs to do likewise and I’ll be set. ;)

  3. Von, thank you so much for putting together this presentation. I feel like I was there. Also, can’t thank you enough for sharing your methods and tips with the design community.

    Cabarga Points Extrema FTW!

  4. Thanks a lot for this entertaining and instructive presentation.

May I ask what software or Flash template you used to make this great looking presentation (I assume you didn’t program it from scratch using Flash) .

  5. Martin,

I used Apple Keynote to put together the presentation. I simply exported a Flash conversion out of Keynote. Some of the transitions don’t convert so I had to simplify it first.

In my live presentation I showed a short animation of a logo I did. That wouldn’t export so I had to put a link to it instead in this download.

So I didn’t use a Flash template I built it with Apple Keynote and saved out as a Flash format. Works really well IMO.

  6. Von, you rocked the session. Again, my favorite one.
And thank you so much for going above and beyond and posting your presentation. You have given back a lot since I have started visiting your site.

    Thanks.

  7. Thank you very much for making this available, it’s much appreciated.

  8. Von,
Love the section about the let-downs of working with marketing mentalities. I’ve been through the same, too many times. Don’t even get me started on committees. It was great seeing the keen, professional way you handled a situation that would make anyones eyes roll (400% indeed!).
Thanks for sharing! Keep doing great work.

  14. [...] My best answer to this would be to direct people to a presentation I did at the HOW Design Conference in Boston. They’ll be able to see exactly how I approach my work. table.mytable { width: [...]
